The ExxonMobil Japan Group including TonenGeneral works to deepen its relationships with local communities through various activities including social contribution and support for culture. These initiatives encompass a wide array of programs in areas including environmental protection, education, health and welfare, community dialogue, and the arts and culture.
Environmental Protection
TonenGeneral Wakayama Refinery Mikan Mountain Patrol
Many farms near the Wakayama Refinery grow the tangerines native to Japan known as mikan. For more than 30 years, refinery employees have been conducting patrols with the people who work in the orchards to make sure that refinery operations are not negatively affecting the growth and development of the mikan. These ongoing efforts to protect the environment are one way that TonenGeneral contributes to communities.
Education
Support for the Tonen International Scholarship Foundation and the General Sekiyu Research Scholarship Foundation
1. Overview of the Tonen International Scholarship Foundation
- Date of Establishment
- December, 1989
- Purpose of Establishment
- To contribute to friendship and goodwill with other countries by awarding scholarships to foreign students studying at Japanese universities.
- Activities
- The foundation provides scholarships for foreign students enrolled at Japanese graduate schools. It has provided scholarships for 166 students from 24 countries since its establishment.
2. Overview of the General Sekiyu Research Scholarship Foundation

- Date of Establishment
- April, 1981
- Purpose of Establishment
- To promote research in the mining and manufacturing industries in Japan.
- Activities
- It provided support to 15 researchers at nine universities. All projects culminate in research theses, and the high quality of research has earned favorable reviews from the relevant sectors.
Health and Welfare
Support for the Japanese Red Cross Society
TonenGeneral is committed to conducting its operations as a good corporate citizen. Among its other activities, the Company places particular emphasis on a range of programs to support the Japanese Red Cross Society in the field of social welfare. For example, many employees have participated in the blood donation campaigns that have been carried out at many offices and plants since 1968. These activities have been highly recognized, and Sakai refinery received the “Testimonial for Blood Donation" from the Japanese Red Cross Society.

TonenGeneral Sakai Refinery Phoenix Tennis Class
The Sakai Refinery has held the Phoenix Tennis Class continuously for 32 years. Crews of refinery employees provide coaching that helps people from the surrounding area enjoy tennis.

The Arts and Culture
ExxonMobil Children's Culture Award and Music Awards
Established in 1966, the ExxonMobil Children's Culture Award has grown to become a time-honored award with 42 years' history. A variety of awardees and genres is a feature of this award. Past awardees have been selected from various professions involved in children's culture, such as authors, scholars, researchers, critics, singers, actors, a director of wild grass garden, an editor and publisher of children's newspaper, a puppetry carnival steering committee and a representative of a children's musical troupe.
The ExxonMobil Music Awards were established in 1971. The “Western Classical Music Promotion Division" was created in 1989 to encourage promising young musicians who would represent future music activities in Japan. Features of the award are divisions for both Japanese traditional music and Western classical music, and recognition not only of a year's activities but of historical accomplishments to date.
