“Protect Tomorrow. Today.”
We do not receive the Earth from our parents - we borrow it from our children. Therefore, we must protect tomorrow, today.
In 2005, the ExxonMobil Group, including TonenGeneral, initiated a new program, “Protect Tomorrow. Today.” We have set concrete target figures for reaching a high level of environmental preservation at all our refineries and chemical plants, and formulated a five-year plan to achieve these targets. For example, in reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, we have set the challenging target of improving energy efficiency by 2 percent each year, for a 10-percent improvement in five years. We will steadily monitor this effort in the medium-term environmental plan that we prepare every year based on OIMS , our comprehensive safety, health and environmental management system.
As a result, the energy efficiency of ExxonMobil Japan Group refineries is consistently among the best in the industry, and in 2008 showed an improvement of fifteen percent versus 1990 levels. Furthermore, at Sakai Refinery, a target of a 3.5% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2011 versus 2008 levels on a unit efficiency basis was submitted to and accepted by the Osaka prefecture authorities.
Additional efforts to reduce our environmental impact include atmospheric pollution prevention such as reduction of sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC); water pollution prevention such as reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD); and reduction of industrial waste. We will also continue to participate in programs for development of innovative technologies such as hydrogen technology and carbon dioxide fixation and storage.
